11.08.2018 : The Institution of Engineers (India), Andhra Pradesh State Center in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Gudlavalleru Engineering College (GEC), Gudlavalleru organized One - day Workshop on CHARACTERISATION OF
METAL MATRIX COMPOSITES on Saturday, the 11th August, 2018 at the Seminar Hall of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Gudlavalleru Engineering College which culminated successfully. 97 persons both faculty and budding engineers from various engineering colleges have participated in the workshop.
Er. T Nagaraju, AMIE welcomed the audience and invited the dignitaries on to the dais while Dr. P Kodanda Rama Rao, FIE presided over the meeting. The Inaugural Function started with lighting the Jyothi by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries on the dais and the prayer song sung by Ms. Kameswari; Ms. Hema and Ms. Viraja of III. Year Mechanical Students of Gudlavalleru Engineering College.
The Chairman while delivering his opening remarks conveyed his heartfelt thanks to the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour, Convener, Coordinator, the Imm. Past Chairman of IEI, AP State Center and Advisor to the Management of Gudlavalleru Engineering College for accepting the request, amidst us and making the Workshop a grand success. He explained in detail about the IEI and its functionaries in general and the Andhra Pradesh State Center of IEI in particular.
The other dignitaries, viz, Coordinator, Er. K CH Kishor Kumar, Associate Professor, GEC; Convener, Dr. M R CH Sastry, Professor & HOD, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, GEC; the Imm. Past Chairman, Dr. M Kama Raju, FIE, IEI, AP State Center; Senior Professor & Advisor to Management of GEC, Dr. S RK Reddy, FIE; the Guest of Honour, Dr. M Gopi Krishna, HOD, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur and the Chief Guest, Dr. D Nageswara Rao, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Centurion University of Technology & Management, Paralakhemundi were among the dignitaries who spoke during the inaugural function.
As a token of recognition, Certificates of Excellence were presented to Guest of Honour, Dr. M Gopi Krishna by Dr. M Kama Raju, FIE and Dr. A Jawahar Babu and the Chief Guest Dr. D Nageswara Rao by Dr. S RK Reddy, FIE and Er. V Gopal, FIE respectively.
After a short tea break, the Panel Discussion on the Workshop was done in two sessions. During the first session, two speakers participated in the discussion immediately after tea break, The remaining three speakers participated in the discussions during the second session after lunch. The following speakers expressed their views:
• To impart knowledge on fabrication techniques and characterisation methods of metal matrix composites.
• To spur enthusiasm in faculty members to carry out innovations and to take up their research work in the area of metal matrix composites.
• To give broad way of exposure to the students regarding selection of materials in the manufacturing area with optimized properties and cost.

• Composites are classified into two types. 1) polymer based composites 2) Metal Matrix composites
• Now our concentration in this workshop is confined to metal matrix composites.
• The properties of composites depends on the reinforcement materials such as ceramic reinforcements of silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, boran carbide and organic reinforcement are also in use in the fabrication of metal matrix composite.
03. Dr. M. Gopi Krihsna thoroughly discussed :
That an increased in demand for various manufacturing industries leads to the necessity to invent new materials with diverse properties. As the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the metals, alloys and metal matrix composites are in the ascending order, the usage of metal matrix composites become more significant. Composite materials have occupied large scale commercial applications in marine, aerospace and automotive industries etc.,
In recent years, the development of new and improved composites and their manufacturing processes has caused unlimited product development opportunities.

This workshop will be introductory in nature addressing the fundamental understanding as well as the applications of Metal Matrix Composites. The workshop has designed for teachers, research scholars & professionals with an engineering background. Even though the subject of composite material is interdisciplinary in nature, emphasis has been laid in the present workshop on understanding the basic mechanics and design aspects of structural composites with a brief introduction to manufacturing.
Active researchers in the composites field will provide in depth analysis of issues related to various applications such as automobile, space, ocean, medical, agricultural, building construction, railway etc.
05. Dr. S.R.K.Reddy discussed :
About the various materials used in Civil & Mechanical disciplines. In case of conventional monolithic materials have limitations in achieving good combination of strength, stiffness, toughness and density to overcome these short comings and to meet ever increasing demand of modern day technology composites are the most promising materials. It is the challenging task to the researchers both in Civil & Mechanical disciplines to apply the composite matrix materials in various fields.
